world cup 2010 – day 13: england, yanks, germany, ghana all through, algeria, slovenia, serbs, aussies ends their campaign

All teams playing in Day 13 still had the chance to qualify for the next stage. In Group C, the much talked England met Slovenia in Port Elizabeth Stadium in a do-or-die match.  A much better England side won the match 1-0, 1256055_full-lndcourtesy of a well taken volley by Jermaine Defoe, from a James Milner superb cross. It was a vastly improved performance by England, who were under fire after 2 previous draws. However they had to settle for second place behind the United States, after a late, late drama in Pretoria, and a possible second round match against arch-rivals Germany.

1256096_full-lnd The match in the Loftus Versfeld Stadium erupted in the 91st minute, when Landon Donovan scored the winner, propelling USA, who at that point were staring on elimination, on top of the table. The match, was set to end in a draw, meaning both sides would be going home early. However, grit and determination were the keywords, as USA managed to find the elusive goal, when Donovan latched on a loose ball after the Algerian goalkeeper Rais M’bolhi punched out Jozy Altidore’s pass into the penalty area. Algeria had a man sent-off when captain Anther Yahia was given a second yellow card in the dying seconds. The late drama meant that Slovenia were eliminated in the most dramatic way, while USA and England continues their journey in the tournament.

1256296_full-lnd At the start of the day, Ghana was leading Group D, while Germany was second after losing to Serbia in their last match. That changed however when Mesut Ozil scored a beauty in their match in the Soccer City Stadium. His volley in the 60th minute proved to be the winner in a match which the Germans dominated. The win ensures another England – Germany classic is to be played out in a World Cup, this time Bloemfontein to be the venue. Another penalty shoot-out perhaps? Thinking

Serbia meanwhile were buoyant in the match against Australia, who were also high in confidence after their commendable 1-1 draw against Ghana. Both teams showed their tenacity and determination to win the match, as the winner will be in with a shout to qualify for the next round. tim-cahill-006 Australia managed to win in the end, with Tim Cahill (69’) and Brett Holman (73’) providing the goals. This forced the Serbians to push for goals, as it was found out that only a draw was enough to make them qualify. Their effort was to no avail however, as they could only score one goal, through Marko Pantelic (84’). Australia’s heavy loss against Germany in their opening match proved decisive, as goal difference played their role in determining the teams for the next round in this group. I dont know
